Hobbs and Galvin Express Optimism About Chase Field Funding Agreement

Optimism Surrounds Arizona Diamondbacks’ Chase Field Renovation Talks

As discussions intensify over stadium funding, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs and Maricopa County Supervisor Thomas Galvin express optimism about finalizing a deal that could ensure the Diamondbacks remain at Chase Field while facilitating necessary renovations. Following a key stakeholder meeting that included representatives from the city of Phoenix, Maricopa County, the Diamondbacks, and state legislators, Galvin reported productive talks regarding the future of the aging facility.

A crucial piece of legislation, House Bill HB2704, aims to redirect sales tax revenue generated at Chase Field to fund improvements. After passing through the Arizona House on February 26, the bill progressed more slowly in the Senate but moved out of the Senate Finance Committee on March 24. The proposal has faced criticism, primarily from the city of Phoenix, over the reallocation of public funds. Revisions to the bill have included limits on public spending and requirements for Maricopa County to match city financial contributions.

Galvin voiced concerns about some amendments, especially related to diverting funds from the county’s general fund, emphasizing that revenue generated from stadium activities should directly support renovations. “If you’re not a D-backs fan, or don’t attend events at Chase Field, this may not impact you. But for those who buy tickets or merchandise, it makes sense that those funds support the stadium,” he stated.

Diamondbacks CEO Derrick Hall described the negotiations as nearing completion, indicating they are "maybe at the 5-yard line" for a renovation deal. Gov. Hobbs echoed Galvin’s sentiments, prioritizing taxpayer protection and considering alternative financing models. She suggested a resolution could be within reach in the next two weeks, potentially leading to the bill’s passage.
