Four House Democrats, including Representatives from California, Florida, Arizona, and Oregon, traveled to El Salvador to demand the release of a Maryland resident mistakenly deported to the country last month. The lawmakers met with the U.S. ambassador to El Salvador to press for transparency regarding the detention of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia and other migrants who have been deported in violation of judicial orders. Despite not being allowed to meet with Mr. Abrego Garcia, the lawmakers relayed their concerns to Salvadoran officials through the U.S. Embassy.
The visit comes as part of ongoing efforts by Democrats in Congress to highlight cases of individuals wrongly deported by the Trump administration. Additionally, the lawmakers raised the case of Andry Jose Hernandez Romero, a Venezuelan makeup artist who was deported from the U.S. last month. The U.S. Embassy official confirmed that this was the first time questions had been raised with President Nayib Bukele’s administration about the treatment of over 250 Venezuelan migrants currently in Salvadoran custody.
The lawmakers urged the U.S. ambassador to advocate for transparency and adherence to judicial orders concerning the detained immigrants. Despite facing roadblocks in meeting the deported individuals, the representatives continue to push for answers and accountability in these cases.
