Arizona Governor Hobbs Vows to Veto Partisan Budget Proposal
PHOENIX — As the June 30 deadline for the state budget approaches, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has firmly rejected any "partisan continuation budget," threatening a veto if such a proposal reaches her desk. In a statement on X, Hobbs emphasized her commitment to bipartisanship, criticizing the $17.6 billion budget passed by the Republican-controlled Arizona Senate as “irresponsible.”
The proposal, which still requires House approval, includes funding allocations of $78 million for public safety, $113 million for transportation, $280 million for K-12 education, $28 million for higher education, $180 million for health and welfare, and $12 million for water initiatives. However, Hobbs argues that the plan disproportionately benefits House Republicans while compromising education funding, especially in light of June’s 40% cut owing to a budget shortfall.
"Sufficient time for negotiations is lacking, and there’s no room for political grandstanding," Hobbs stated, urging House Republicans to reconsider their stance. The House convenes Monday to continue discussions, as the pressure mounts for a finalized budget before the fiscal year ends.
