David Hines: The Final Dance – Part One

AIA Executive Director David Hines Passes the Torch to Dr. Jim Dean

As the 2024-25 school year comes to a close, David Hines will step down as Executive Director of the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA), handing over the reins to Dr. Jim Dean on July 1. Hines has dedicated 17 years to the AIA, taking on the role of Executive Director in 2017, where his leadership has left a lasting impact on Arizona high school athletics.

One of Hines’ most notable achievements is the introduction of the Open Division football playoff format in 2019, aiming to level the competitive playing field. He also revamped the basketball postseason, introduced girls flag football and wrestling, and sanctioned beach volleyball, further enriching Arizona’s sports landscape.

In a recent interview, Hines reflected on his tenure, highlighting both triumphs and challenges. Having initially served as a tournament coordinator, he embraced the Executive Director position when the opportunity arose, acknowledging the heavy responsibility that came with leadership. Hines noted that while he aimed to serve the best interests of the athletes, not all decisions were universally popular.

Navigating the COVID-19 pandemic was a defining moment for Hines, who relied on a committee of medical professionals to guide decisions amidst uncertainty. His approach to managing the crisis emphasized the importance of community health and safety, even if it meant making difficult calls.

Looking ahead, Hines expressed confidence in the enduring success of the Open Division format, believing it fosters fair competition in a landscape marked by disparities. As he prepares to exit, his legacy remains evident: a commitment to integrity in sports and a dedication to the athletes of Arizona.

The AIA community bids farewell to Hines with gratitude for his unwavering service and vision, as anticipation builds for Dr. Dean’s leadership in this new chapter.
