Solar Farms in Arizona Driving Burrowing Owls from Their Habitats

Wild at Heart Takes Action to Relocate Western Burrowing Owls in Arizona

PHOENIX — The rapid expansion of solar farms across Arizona, vital for the clean energy transition, poses a significant threat to the Western Burrowing Owl, pushing these small birds out of their underground homes. “Past developments primarily caused habitat loss, but solar farms now play a considerable role,” noted Greg Clark from Wild at Heart raptor rescue.

To combat this issue, Wild at Heart collaborates with private and governmental landowners to relocate these owls to suitable new habitats. Operating for over two decades, the organization relies on donations and volunteer support. “They contribute to pest management by controlling grasshoppers and rodents,” Clark emphasized.

Recent efforts included a volunteer event where burrowing owls were relocated near Prescott. The relocation process involves weeks of acclimatization, where owls are kept in predator-resistant tents to adapt to their new burrows, designed for safety against flooding and predators.

Additionally, climate change exacerbates the challenges facing these birds. With prolonged drought impacting grasslands that provide food, Wild at Heart strategically relocates owls to higher elevations with better conditions. Thankfully, their adaptability, seen in their ability to hunt during both day and night, offers hope for their survival.
