Shohei Ohtani Makes Dodgers Pitching Debut After Elbow Surgery

Los Angeles, CA — Shohei Ohtani is set to make his highly anticipated pitching debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night against the San Diego Padres, marking his return to the mound 643 days after undergoing elbow surgery. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed that Ohtani will pitch an inning or two in the series opener.

Ohtani, a three-time MVP, has been fine-tuning his skills through simulated games while maintaining a powerful presence as a designated hitter. Currently batting .290 with 25 home runs — the most in the National League — along with 41 RBIs and 11 stolen bases, his return provides a much-needed boost to the Dodgers’ pitching staff, which has been hit hard by injuries.

Typically, players returning from injury undergo minor league rehab assignments, but Ohtani defies this norm due to his unique status as a two-way player. His presence on the mound will effectively add an extra pitcher to the roster without necessitating any changes, a significant advantage as the Dodgers navigate the challenges posed by injuries to key pitchers.

Ohtani, who played a crucial role in helping the Dodgers secure their eighth World Series title last season, is in the first year of a massive 10-year, $700 million contract. Before his injury, he had a stellar season with the Los Angeles Angels in 2023, sporting a 10-5 record, a 3.14 ERA, and 167 strikeouts. His last pitching appearance was on August 23, 2023, against the Cincinnati Reds, after which he underwent surgery on September 19.

Roberts expressed excitement about Ohtani’s return, acknowledging the anticipation surrounding his debut. "It’s good for our team… most importantly, I’m excited for Shohei," he said.

Fans and teammates alike are eager to see what the superstar will bring to the mound after this extended hiatus.
