Heat Wave Hits Phoenix: First Day Over 110 Degrees This Year

PHOENIX — Phoenix experienced its first 110-degree day of the year on Saturday, as confirmed by the National Weather Service (NWS). The temperature at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport peaked at 110°F around 4:35 p.m., marking a significant summer milestone. Last year, the city recorded a historic 70 days at or above this temperature threshold, along with 143 days exceeding 100°F.

As June progresses, Phoenix has already seen 25 days with highs in the 100s, with a low of 82°F on Saturday—four degrees above the June average. An extreme heat warning was issued by the NWS for the region, forecasting even hotter conditions for Father’s Day, with Sunday’s highs predicted to reach between 110°F and 114°F.

To combat the heat, local health officials urge residents to stay hydrated with water and electrolyte drinks while limiting alcohol consumption. When venturing outdoors, wearing lightweight clothing and applying sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is strongly recommended. Additionally, community members are encouraged to support local shelters, Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS) and Keys to Change, by donating water and other essentials to help those in need during the heat wave.
