Father’s Day Ejections Bond Diamondbacks Manager and His Son
Phoenix, AZ – Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo received an unexpected yet heartwarming Father’s Day call from his eldest son, Nick, who is currently managing the South Bend Cubs. The call came after Nick was ejected from his game against the Fort Wayne TinCaps, permitting him to channel some of his father’s passionate approach to the game.
“I had a great text message when I woke up, and then he called saying, ‘Dad, happy Father’s Day. I have a great present for you,’” Torey shared. “He got thrown out for three bad calls by the same umpire, and he just couldn’t hold back.”
Nick, 31, mirrored his father’s antics from earlier this season when Torey went viral for theatrically attempting to eject multiple umpires after being tossed himself for arguing an interference call. Similar to his father, Nick was seen arguing a questionable infield catch call before being separated from the game.
Despite their respective teams having faced challenges this season, both entered Sunday on a five-game winning streak. The bond and shared experiences in the world of baseball have allowed them to support one another. Reflecting on their conversations, Torey emphasizes the importance of authenticity in coaching, stating, “Be your authentic self… that’s what’s gonna train people the best way.”
Nick’s ongoing journey in the minors has Torey hopeful for his son’s future in major league coaching, recalling their mutual advice during tough times. “It works both ways. He’s my son, but he’s also a colleague, and we live in the same space every single day,” said Torey.
As they navigate the ups and downs of their seasons, both Lovullos continue to demonstrate the powerful connection between fatherhood and shared passion for baseball.
