Surge in Immigration-Related Charges in Arizona

PHOENIX — Federal prosecutors have reported a significant rise in immigration-related charges in Arizona, with over 3,900 individuals charged since March. In the past week alone, 266 new charges were filed, including 108 for illegally re-entering the U.S., 140 for illegal entry, and 18 for human smuggling, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona.

Notable incidents include the case of Fernando Alvin Robles, who was arrested after driving suspiciously at an immigration checkpoint. Upon consent to search, agents discovered a Guatemalan citizen hidden in his vehicle, leading to charges of Transportation of Illegal Aliens for Profit and Illegal Re-entry.

Another case involved Jesus Maldonado‐Cortez, who fled from Border Patrol agents on a dirt road known for smuggling activity. After crashing through a fence and abandoning his vehicle, he was apprehended along with five other Mexican nationals who were undocumented. Maldonado‐Cortez faces similar charges as Robles.

With these developments, authorities are intensifying efforts to combat illegal immigration and smuggling in the region. For the latest updates, locals can download the free 12News app for breaking news and more.
