Diamondbacks Secure Quality Victory in Opener Against Padres

Diamondbacks Power Past Padres with Stellar Pitching and Offense

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks continued their winning streak, defeating the San Diego Padres 5-1 on Friday at Chase Field. This victory marks their fourth consecutive win, following a sweep against the Seattle Mariners, and highlighted their effective pitching, improved defense, and timely hitting.

Starter Ryne Nelson, backed by a strong bullpen performance, delivered an impressive outing, allowing no earned runs over five innings despite feeling under the weather prior to the game. The D-backs’ staff, including Kyle Backhus, Juan Morillo, Ryan Thompson, and Shelby Miller, contributed to an overall display that extended their record to 17-0 this season when allowing two runs or fewer.

Manager Torey Lovullo praised Nelson’s grit, stating, “What’s more impressive [is] he’s been laying in bed sick… and kept a really good offensive team in check.” Nelson managed to limit the Padres to just one unearned run despite early struggles, displaying resilience that has become characteristic of this year’s squad.

The game began with a shaky start for Arizona, as the Padres struck first, but the Diamondbacks quickly turned the tide with a solo homer from Corbin Carroll, who reached the 20-home run mark for the third consecutive season. Key contributions followed from Geraldo Perdomo and Josh Naylor, securing the lead in the third inning and extending it in the fifth.

Arizona’s bullpen showcased dominant performances, giving up no hits over four innings and maintaining a strong 2.65 ERA over the last five games.

The Diamondbacks are now over .500 for the first time since May 23 and are eyeing a playoff spot, sitting 4.5 games behind the leaders in their division. The team looks to continue their momentum with Zac Gallen slated to start in a nationally televised matchup against the Padres on Saturday.
