The Unbelievable Escape of the Last Survivor of the Air India Crash

Viswashkumar, who had been in India with his brother for eight or nine months, was returning to his family in London when the plane he was on crashed shortly after takeoff. He described the traumatic moment to Reuters, stating that the aircraft experienced a sudden halt in the air, followed by an increase in engine thrust before it crashed into a building. He was seated on a side of the plane that landed near the ground floor of a hostel.

Upon witnessing the chaos, including the deaths of the air hostess and others, Viswashkumar managed to escape through a small opening when his door broke. He noted the critical situation on the opposite side of the plane, which was blocked by a building wall. He sustained burns on his left hand and was subsequently transported to a hospital where he is recovering, though he is reportedly “psychologically disturbed” by the experience.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited him in the hospital, where Viswashkumar reflected on his survival, stating, “It’s miracle, everything.” His brother in the UK described his survival as miraculous but expressed concern for their third brother, who was also on the flight. The tragic incident involved 230 passengers and 12 crew members, resulting in 241 fatalities. Among those on board were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, one Canadian national, and seven Portuguese nationals.
