Press Release: Arizona Stadium Renovation Bill Stalled as Budget Deadline Approaches
As Arizona’s budget deadline nears, House Bill 2704, which would fund crucial renovations at Chase Field, remains in limbo. The proposed legislation is essential for the Arizona Diamondbacks, who have called Chase Field home since 1998, and seeks to ensure the stadium’s infrastructure is updated.
Derrick Hall, president and CEO of the Diamondbacks, expressed optimism that the bill could soon progress to the Senate committee for consideration. "It could go to the Senate floor if the president decides to put it on the floor,” Hall stated during an interview with Arizona Sports. He emphasized the need for legislators to actively support the bill, rather than assuming its approval is a given.
The renovation, estimated to cost between $400 million and $500 million, aims to modernize critical components of the stadium, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and scoreboard enhancements. Hall noted that while the Diamondbacks will contribute $200 million to $300 million of their own funds, significant support from HB 2704 is vital. The bill would redirect a 5% state sales tax collected at the stadium, along with additional taxes from the city and Maricopa County, into a renovation fund.
Despite its passage in the House in February, the bill has faced challenges in the Senate, including amendments that restrict public funding contributions. Additionally, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego mentioned the city’s negotiation for a more fiscally responsible renovation plan, increasing the long-term costs associated with the bill.
With the legislative session set to wrap up before July 1, stakeholders are urging swift action to ensure that Chase Field remains a vibrant home for the Diamondbacks and a key asset for the downtown community.
