Arizona Baseball Falls to Coastal Carolina in College World Series Opener
OMAHA, Nebr. (KVOA) – Arizona Baseball faced a tough defeat against Coastal Carolina, losing 7-4 in their College World Series opener. This marks Coastal Carolina’s impressive 24th consecutive win. The highly anticipated matchup, reminiscent of the 2016 College World Series Finals, saw a tie at four heading into the eighth inning, where the Chants exploded with a three-run rally.
Wells Sykes initiated the rally with a bloop double, and after an intentional walk to Bodine, Sebastian Alexander—who had previously struggled at the plate—delivered a crucial hit to bring in the go-ahead run. The Chants secured their lead with a two-run double from Blake Barthol. With their backs against the wall, the Wildcats made a push in the ninth, starting with a double from Andrew Cain. However, despite bringing the tying run to the plate, they were ultimately thwarted by a double play, ending the game.
Coastal Carolina struck first with a two-run single by Sykes in the second. Arizona’s Mason White made history with his 49th career home run, but it wasn’t enough to claim victory. The Wildcats will now face either Louisville or Oregon State next, needing a win to stay alive in Omaha.
