Phoenix Mercury Spoil Paige Bueckers’ Return with Victory Over Dallas Wings
PHOENIX (AP) — The Phoenix Mercury secured a decisive 93-80 victory over the Dallas Wings on Wednesday night, with standout performances from Satou Sabally and Alyssa Thomas. Sabally notched 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Thomas contributed an impressive 11 points and 10 assists against her former team, overshadowing Paige Bueckers’ remarkable 35-point return after a four-game absence due to concussion protocol and illness.
Bueckers burst onto the court, making her first six shots and finishing 13 of 19 overall, becoming the fourth rookie in Dallas history to score over 30 points in a game. Her feat was particularly notable as she topped her previous career-high of 21 points in a single game. Despite Bueckers’ scoring prowess, the Wings’ overall performance struggled, with the rest of the team shooting only 33% from the field, combining for 16 of 48.
For Phoenix, Kitija Laksa added 14 points with four three-pointers, and Kathryn Westbeld scored all 11 of her points in the first half, contributing to the team’s solid offensive display. Lexi Held and DiJonai Carrington also rounded out the scoring for the Mercury, with Carrington contributing 11 points and eight rebounds.
The Mercury led 67-57 after a strong third quarter, thanks in part to Sabally’s efforts. With this victory, Phoenix improved its record to 7-4, while Dallas fell to a dismal 1-10.
Looking ahead, the Mercury will face the formidable Las Vegas Aces on Sunday, with tip-off scheduled for 3 p.m. MST.
