PHOENIX — Andrew Saalfrank’s Comeback Sparks Hope for Diamondbacks’ Bullpen
After a year-long suspension for betting on baseball, Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Andrew Saalfrank made a triumphant return to the mound on Tuesday, throwing a scoreless inning for Triple-A Reno. Saalfrank was reinstated to the 40-man roster last week following his punishment for placing $445.87 in bets during his minor league tenure. Crucially, he did not wager on his own team, avoiding a lifetime ban.
Farm director Chris Slivka emphasized the importance of regular pitching for Saalfrank as he aims to reclaim his place in the MLB bullpen. "We’d like to see him continue to get regular usage and workload typical for a reliever," he said, indicating the team is treating Saalfrank’s month of practice as a mini spring training.
Manager Torey Lovullo noted Saalfrank’s dedication during his suspension and praised his efforts to stay connected with teammates. “You made a mistake and you’re owning up to that,” he reassured Saalfrank.
