Fireworks Safety Alert: Flagstaff Prepares for Fourth of July
FLAGSTAFF, AZ (AZFamily) — With Independence Day around the corner, fireworks are hitting store shelves across the Valley, but their legality varies by region. In Flagstaff, currently under Stage 1 fire restrictions due to extreme drought conditions, fireworks are strictly prohibited. Firefighters are ramping up staffing ahead of the holiday to mitigate fire risks.
Mark Adams of the Flagstaff Fire Department warns, "It just takes one spark to start a wildfire." With approximately half of Arizona experiencing extreme drought and June being the driest month, the dangers from fireworks are heightened. The city emphasizes the importance of safety, encouraging residents to save their fireworks for celebrations in areas where they are permitted.
Violating the fireworks ban can result in fines up to $2,500 and jail time. Flagstaff has also partnered with local agencies to monitor for illegal fireworks use. This year, the city will host a drone show to celebrate July 4th instead. "We want people to have a good time but prioritize safety," Adams said. Flagstaff aims to ensure an enjoyable, fireworks-free celebration for all.
