Diamondbacks Face Injury Woes as Closer Justin Martinez Exits with Elbow Tightness
PHOENIX — In a troubling turn of events, Arizona Diamondbacks closer Justin Martinez exited Monday’s game against the Seattle Mariners due to right elbow tightness, raising concerns for the bullpen amid a recent spate of pitching injuries.
Martinez reported that his elbow grew increasingly tight during the game, which resulted in a noticeable dip in his sinker’s velocity. After striking out two batters but then walking Dylan Moore, he called for the trainer, signalling potential trouble. The team has scheduled imaging for Martinez on Tuesday, putting his future in jeopardy as they strive for a strong finish to the season.
“I want to be healthy to help the team win… It is what it is,” Martinez said postgame, expressing frustration over the situation.
To compound their challenges, fellow reliever Christian Montes De Oca was unavailable due to pregame elbow discomfort and will also undergo imaging on Tuesday. Manager Torey Lovullo acknowledged the severity of the situation, stating that his concern level for both pitchers is "high."
Martinez’s departure led to a rough inning for the Diamondbacks, but they managed to pull off a thrilling victory, winning 11-10 on a walk-off grand slam by Josh Naylor.
The Diamondbacks have been plagued by injury setbacks; ace Corbin Burnes is slated for Tommy John surgery, while Cristian Mena and Kendall Graveman recently joined the injured list. Martinez, who had previously battled shoulder inflammation this season, expressed that this injury feels different from his past experience.
"As one of your high-leverage guys, it’s tough to lose someone like him," noted starter Merrill Kelly, reflecting on Martinez’s valuable role within the team.
As the Diamondbacks push forward, the hope remains that both Martinez and De Oca will recover swiftly to aid the team’s playoff aspirations.
