Cincinnati Reds Complete Sweep of Arizona Diamondbacks with 4-2 Victory
In a challenging matchup on Sunday, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-2, securing a three-game sweep. Zac Gallen, who pitched 6.2 innings, showed resilience but ultimately surrendered three home runs, with the decisive blow coming after a rain delay in the seventh.
Gallen’s performance was notably strong for the first six innings, allowing only two solo home runs and three walks. However, the Reds capitalized on the 31-minute rain delay, scoring crucial runs after two early outs in the seventh inning, changing the tide of the game.
The Diamondbacks’ offense struggled throughout the series, with a dismal total of just six runs compared to 21 scored by the Reds. They went quietly in the final four innings on Sunday, failing to mount any substantial comeback.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand, a standout for the Reds and a former Yavapai College player, was particularly impactful. Returning from the injured list, he homered in all three games of the series and contributed significantly with a walk-off single in Friday’s game, along with a 2-for-3 performance on Sunday that included another homer.
In a bright spot for Arizona, left-handed reliever Kyle Backhus made his major league debut in the eighth inning, impressively retiring the Reds’ top hitters in order, including striking out De La Cruz and grounding Encarnacion-Strand out.
Looking ahead, the Diamondbacks, with a record of 31-34, will attempt to bounce back as they return home to face the Seattle Mariners on Monday night. Fans can catch the game at 6:40 p.m. MST on 98.7 or via the Arizona Sports app.
