Press Release: Rep. Yassamin Ansari Advocates for Wrongfully Deported Man’s Return
Phoenix, AZ — U.S. Representative Yassamin Ansari announced the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was wrongfully deported to El Salvador earlier this year, thanks to advocacy efforts from Congress and citizens nationwide.
Abrego Garcia, 29, was sent back to a Salvadorean prison in March under the Trump administration, after living in the U.S. for 14 years to escape gang threats in his home country. Rep. Ansari, along with three other Democratic lawmakers, traveled to El Salvador in April, urging the U.S. embassy to assist in his repatriation. Their efforts culminated in communications between the U.S. embassy and El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele.
In a statement following Abrego Garcia’s return, Ansari emphasized the importance of due process, declaring that he should never have been deported without a fair legal proceeding. "Now, Mr. Abrego Garcia can have his day in court," she asserted. Ansari highlighted the commitment of her colleagues and American citizens in holding the former administration accountable for its actions.
This successful advocacy underscores the ongoing debate surrounding immigration and due process in the U.S. legal system.
