Diamondbacks’ Gabriel Moreno Exits Game After Hand Injury
CINCINNATI (AP) — Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno left Friday night’s game against the Cincinnati Reds after suffering a hand injury from a wild pitch. The incident occurred in the sixth inning with the Diamondbacks holding a narrow 3-2 lead. A pitch from right-hander Cristian Mena bounced in front of home plate, catching Moreno on his throwing hand.
Despite initial attempts to remain in the game, Moreno experienced too much pain and swelling to continue. He was visibly affected as he consulted with the team’s training staff before ultimately making the decision to exit the field. His replacement, Jose Herrera, took over behind the plate.
Moreno, who had recently been on a seven-game hitting streak, ended the night 0-for-2 at the plate. The young catcher boasts an impressive season so far, batting .281 with four home runs and 17 RBIs over 49 games. Manager Torey Lovullo provided an update post-game, confirming that X-rays on Moreno’s hand returned negative. "Taking him out of the game was precautionary," Lovullo noted, mentioning the trainer’s recommendation after observing Moreno’s throwing ability. "There’s substantial swelling in that area. We’ll see how he wakes up and feels tomorrow."
The game against the Reds was ultimately suspended due to rain, with the score tied at 3-3 after six innings. The teams will resume play on Saturday at 11:10 a.m. MST, followed by the regularly scheduled game approximately 40 minutes after the conclusion of the suspended match.
