Bill to Prohibit Antisemitism in Arizona Classrooms Reaches Gov. Hobbs’ Desk

Arizona Lawmakers Pass Controversial Anti-Antisemitism Bill in Schools

PHOENIX — This week, Arizona lawmakers passed HB 2867, the "Antisemitism in Education Act," aimed at prohibiting the teaching of antisemitism in state classrooms and on college campuses. The bill gained traction following a report from the Anti-Defamation League, revealing that 2024 marked the highest number of antisemitic incidents in the U.S. since record-keeping began 46 years ago.

Jake Bennett of the Israeli-American Coalition for Action stated, “Arizona taxpayer money shouldn’t pay teachers to indoctrinate kids into hatred.” The bill, which passed the Senate largely along party lines and the House with some bipartisan support, mandates that educators avoid teaching any antisemitic content, with penalties including formal reprimands or termination for repeat violations.

However, opposition remains strong. Marisol Garcia, president of the Arizona Education Association, argues the law could discourage teachers and detracts from essential educational investments. Critics express concern over potential liability issues for educators and worry it may contribute to broader efforts to dismantle public education.

A coalition of 13 organizations, including the AEA, has urged Governor Katie Hobbs to veto the bill. As of now, her office has not provided any comment on the legislation.
