Mahmoud Khalil Addresses ‘Grotesque’ Allegations in Recent Legal Filing, Claims Arrest Led to ‘Irreparable Harm’

Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University student, has publicly addressed the effects of his March detention by immigration agents, highlighting the “irreparable harm” to him and his family. In a recent declaration, Khalil described the anguish of missing the birth of his son, Deen, which occurred while he was confined in a detention center. Instead of being next to his wife, Dr. Noor Abdalla, during labor, he listened helplessly over a phone line. Khalil condemned the actions of the government, particularly targeting President Donald Trump for what he labeled as “grotesque and false” accusations against him, including being a “U.S. foreign policy concern” and a supporter of Hamas. He believes these allegations are not only false but also rooted in racism.

Khalil’s wife reported feeling unsafe due to the harassment they face since the government’s public portrayal of Khalil. As a consequence of his detention, Khalil lost a job offer for a policy advisor position at Oxfam International, which he attributes to his damaged reputation stemming from the stigma attached to his detention.

Khalil is currently held in a facility in rural Louisiana, and although he was granted a visit with his wife and son, he remains concerned about the impact of the government’s portrayal on his family and future career in international diplomacy and human rights advocacy. Khalil’s experience underscores the broader implications of immigration enforcement on individuals and families, as he and his wife navigate the lasting consequences of his detention on their lives and aspirations.
