Press Release: College of the Canyons Launches Pharmacy Technology Program
The College of the Canyons (COC) is excited to announce that applications are now open for its inaugural Pharmacy Technology program, set to launch in fall 2025. The college will accept 18 students into this pioneering cohort until June 30.
Designed to address the rising demand for certified pharmacy technicians in the community, the program will equip students for entry-level positions in various environments, including retail, inpatient and outpatient hospital pharmacies, as well as specialty and veterinary pharmacies.
Dr. Thea Sweo Alvarado, interim assistant superintendent/vice president of instruction, emphasized the program’s hands-on approach, which includes a required externship to ensure students are job-ready upon graduation. The curriculum covers essential topics such as pharmacology, pharmacy calculations, sterile and non-sterile compounding, and pharmacy operations through a mix of classroom learning and practical simulations.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for pharmacy technicians is projected to grow by seven percent from 2023 to 2033, highlighting the promising career opportunities available for graduates. Successful completion of the program will enable students to apply for a California Pharmacy Technician license and sit for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE).
The two-semester curriculum includes courses like Introduction to Pharmacy Technology, Pharmacy Calculations, and advanced training in sterile compounding, ensuring comprehensive preparation.
Future students are encouraged to attend a Zoom information session on June 10 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Registration is necessary before noon on that day.
