New Light Rail Extension in South Phoenix Features Community-Inspired Public Art
PHOENIX — A vibrant new sculpture has been unveiled near Central Avenue and Sherman Street as part of the Valley Metro light rail extension, set to officially open on June 7. Designed by Isaac Caruso, the phoenix sculpture symbolizes the city’s namesake and reflects the resilience of the local community.
According to Valley Metro, the artwork embodies the "cyclical nature of life in our community," illustrating the fiery spirit of its residents. The sculpture notably lights up at night, representing the "fire within all of us to thrive."
This phoenix joins a collection of public art along the expanded 5.5-mile route, which further enhances the cultural landscape of south Phoenix. Other notable installations include a massive nopales cactus, a monument honoring the Ancestral Sonoran Desert People, and a tribute displaying the names of 1,379 families connected to the neighborhood.
The light rail extension not only improves transportation in the area but also celebrates the unique heritage and spirit of the community through these artistic expressions.
