Press Release: National Gliding Competition Takes to the Skies in Marana, Arizona

MARANA, Ariz. — Pilots from across the nation have gathered in Marana for the Soaring Society of America’s national gliding competition, hosted by the Tucson Soaring Club. This eleven-day event showcases gliders with 15-meter wingspans as competitors push the limits of their abilities. Long-time pilot Chuck Pinney, who is taking part for the first time, expressed pride in being part of this supportive community.

The competition emphasizes the importance of aviation to Arizona’s economy, with Contest Manager Eric Redweik advocating for the growth and exploration of soaring as a sport. This is the Tucson Soaring Club’s first national competition since 1983, which began on May 26.

Participants navigate daily courses ranging from 70 to 350 miles, contingent on weather conditions. “Arizona provides incredible soaring opportunities,” Redweik explained, highlighting the region’s unique thermal and updraft conditions ideal for flying. Each day’s performance is recorded via GPS, allowing organizers to determine scores based on speed and distance.

The competition concludes this Thursday, promising excitement and camaraderie among gliding enthusiasts. For more on this thrilling event, follow luggage on social media or reach out to journalist Madison Thomas.
