Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez has been charged with racketeering and conspiracy to commit racketeering in connection with a large-scale gambling operation in central Florida. The announcement came from Attorney General James Uthmeier’s office, following Lopez’s booking into Lake County Jail on Thursday. Governor Ron DeSantis has suspended Lopez from his role, appointing Christopher Blackmon as interim sheriff. Allegations suggest Lopez used his position to protect the illicit gambling enterprise, reportedly receiving personal payouts and campaign contributions in return.
Lopez, who was first elected in November 2020 and re-elected in 2024, has been a significant figure in law enforcement. Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Mark Glass emphasized that Lopez violated the integrity expected from law enforcement officials. The criminal organization was revealed through a collaborative investigation led by Homeland Security Investigations and backed by the FDLE, which found the gambling ring allegedly earned over $21.6 million, primarily operating in Lake and Osceola Counties.
Don Fisher, a county manager, clarified that the county had no involvement in the investigation, as the sheriff operates independently. He expressed support for Interim Sheriff Blackmon amid the situation. Lopez, raised in central Florida and a veteran with 22 years in the military, has received numerous accolades throughout his career, including founding the “Women on Watch” all-female police academy.
As details emerge, it remains unclear if Lopez has legal representation. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 30. Uthmeier described this as a solemn day for Florida, underscoring the trust placed in constitutional officers.
