Arizona Lawmakers Cheer Supreme Court Decision to Dismiss Mexico’s Gun Violence Lawsuit

Supreme Court Decision Blocks Mexico’s Firearm Lawsuit, Arizona Lawmakers Respond

PHOENIX (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court delivered a unanimous ruling that blocks Mexico’s $10 billion lawsuit against major gun manufacturers, a decision applauded by Arizona lawmakers. The justices overturned a lower court’s ruling that allowed the case to proceed, invoking U.S. laws that protect firearm makers from liability when their products are misused.

Arizona Senate Republicans, in a statement, hailed the ruling as a win for Second Amendment rights and national sovereignty. Senate President Warren Petersen criticized Mexico’s government for blaming U.S. companies for violence, asserting it deflects responsibility from enforcing its own laws and addressing cartel-related issues. He likened the situation to holding the auto industry accountable for drunk driving incidents.

In contrast, the gun violence prevention nonprofit GIFFORDS Law Center emphasized that the ruling does not grant gun manufacturers complete immunity. Legal Director David Pucino stated that accountability remains intact for those who violate laws, allowing for victims to seek justice in court.

Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum highlighted an ongoing lawsuit against Arizona gun shops, indicating further legal battles are on the horizon.
