Scientists Report Unprecedented Seaweed Invasion in the Caribbean and Surrounding Regions This May

The presence of sargassum, a type of seaweed, in the Caribbean has become a significant concern, marked by its three distinct types that reproduce asexually and thrive based on environmental conditions. Experts, including researcher Barnes, are exploring factors like agricultural runoff, warming water temperatures, and changing weather patterns that may contribute to the seaweed’s proliferation. While sargassum serves a vital role as a healthy habitat for marine life in open waters, its accumulation near shores poses serious problems, such as blocking sunlight essential for coral reefs and harming local ecosystems.

The buildup of sargassum impacts tourism — a critical revenue source for many Caribbean islands. In Punta Cana, authorities have taken preventive measures like installing barriers to keep the seaweed at bay. In St. Maarten, emergency cleanup operations were implemented after residents complained about the unpleasant odors of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide that can cause respiratory issues. French Caribbean officials are also adopting advanced methods to collect the algae, but these solutions are costly and labor-intensive, raising concerns about the potential impact on marine life, including turtle nests.

Most cleanup efforts rely on hotels, which sometimes compensate guests with refunds or alternative beach access, underscoring the financial challenges faced by many islands. Sargassum typically increases in volume from late spring to summer before tapering off in late fall or winter. However, experts predict an ongoing rise in sargassum levels in the coming months, suggesting ongoing challenges for coastal communities that rely heavily on tourism and a healthy marine ecosystem.
