Demetric D. Scott, a 52-year-old Wisconsin man, faces charges for forging letters to intimidate a potential witness against him in an armed robbery case. Prosecutors allege that Scott impersonated Ramón Morales Reyes, 54, by sending letters to state and federal officials, threatening violence against former President Donald Trump and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Morales Reyes was arrested on May 22 due to the forged letters, which included threats to Trump, leading a Homeland Security official to label him a criminal.
However, an investigation revealed discrepancies. Morales Reyes, not fluent in English, could not have penned the letters, as found through handwriting samples. When questioned, Morales Reyes identified Scott, the man who had previously robbed him, as the individual likely responsible for the letters. Scott was already in jail facing armed robbery and aggravated battery charges when the letters were sent.
Investigators uncovered jail calls where Scott discussed plans to have Morales Reyes deported, believing that if he were out of the picture, Scott’s trial would be dismissed. On May 30, Scott confessed to writing the letters, claiming he intended to prevent Morales Reyes from testifying, not to target Trump directly. A search of his jail cell found writing materials that matched the letters.
Morales Reyes remains in ICE custody facing removal proceedings, although he is applying for a U-visa, which protects certain crime victims and witnesses. His attorney emphasized that Morales Reyes was a victim of Scott’s robbery. The case is ongoing, with Scott’s trial scheduled for July 14, 2023.
