Third Instance of Bird Flu Confirmed at Maricopa County Commercial Farm

Headline: Third Avian Influenza Case Detected in Maricopa County

Maricopa County, AZ – The Arizona Department of Agriculture confirmed a third case of Avian Influenza at a commercial poultry farm on Monday. Symptoms consistent with the virus were first noted on May 29, prompting the submission of samples to the Arizona Veterinary Diagnostic Lab. Confirmation came from the National Veterinary Services Laboratory on May 30.

Officials assure that eggs produced after the onset of symptoms did not enter the food supply, and there have been no reported illnesses among humans. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) considers the public risk to be low, with the greatest threat to those involved in bird care.

This comes on the heels of a recent outbreak at Hickman’s Family Farms, where the farm was quarantined after infection was reported. Previous reports indicated that Hickman’s had lost over a million egg-laying hens due to the virus earlier this year.

Authorities encourage the public to report any signs of poultry illness immediately to the USDA at 1-866-536-7593 or contact local veterinary services. For wild bird concerns, residents should reach out to the Arizona Game and Fish Department.
