Arizona Diamondbacks’ Corbin Burnes Placed on 15-Day IL Due to Elbow Injury
In a concerning development for the Arizona Diamondbacks, star pitcher Corbin Burnes has been placed on the 15-day injured list following his early exit from Sunday’s game against the Nationals, due to discomfort in his right elbow. Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro was the first to report the news, which comes after Burnes underwent an MRI on Monday. He will seek a second opinion later this week. His IL status is retroactive to Monday.
To fill the gap in the roster, the Diamondbacks recalled minor league pitcher Tommy Henry from Triple-A, who will serve in a relief role, while Ryne Nelson will rejoin the starting rotation. Henry has struggled this season with a 7.39 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP at Reno.
Burnes, who has shown impressive form with a 1.71 ERA since returning from a shoulder inflammation in May, exited the game after tossing 4.2 scoreless innings with 70 pitches thrown. Despite a 3-1 victory over the Nationals, the focus remained on Burnes, who noted, “the tightness was just too much,” expressing hope that the injury does not signify a major setback.
Manager Torey Lovullo confirmed that Burnes remained in Phoenix for further evaluation while the team heads on a road trip against the Atlanta Braves. Burnes, who signed a six-year, $210 million contract last winter, has quickly become a vital asset for the Diamondbacks.
With Burnes sidelined, the team is expecting Eduardo Rodriguez’s return from the IL during the upcoming series against the Reds. Lovullo emphasized the fluid situation, mentioning that both Mena and Nelson would play crucial roles in the interim.
