Jacobs Technology Secures $4 Billion Space Force Contract
VANDENBERG SPACE FORCE BASE, Calif. – Jacobs Technology Inc. has been awarded a significant $4 billion indefinite-quantity/indefinite-delivery contract to enhance and modernize the U.S. Space Force’s Eastern and Western Ranges, transforming them into high-capacity, multi-use spaceports.
The Space Systems Command announced that this contract, known as the Space Force Range Contract (SFRC), will enable commercial launch service providers to pay directly for services linked to launches from Patrick Space Force Base in Florida and Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. This new financial model alleviates the burden on government resources, as Brigadier General Kristin Panzenhagen explained, “Historically, the government has fronted these costs."
With upgrades expected to be completed by March 31, 2035, the initiative aims to revitalize aging infrastructure at both ranges, which have faced increasing operational costs. Brigadier General Panzenhagen emphasized the contract’s importance in facilitating responsive operations and flexible maintenance services, which aim to improve overall operational efficiency.
The Space Systems Command oversees an annual budget of $15.6 billion, representing nearly half of the federal government’s discretionary budget. By allowing commercial partners to fund their task orders, the SFRC aligns with Congressional mandates for financial improvement and audit readiness.
In addition to launch services, Vandenberg’s Western Test Range plays a vital role in national security as the primary testing site for the U.S. nuclear response architecture. Plans are also underway to modernize this range, replacing outdated delivery systems to enhance national defense capabilities.
This groundbreaking contract marks a significant step in partnering with the private sector to bolster the U.S. Space Force’s operational readiness and capabilities.
