Marc Maron announced the end of his acclaimed podcast, “WTF With Marc Maron,” after nearly 16 years, with the final episodes set to air this fall. In a recent episode, he explained that he and producer Brendan McDonald came to the decision together, expressing satisfaction with the work they accomplished. Maron clarified that this was not a difficult choice, as both felt it was time to conclude the podcast.
Since its launch in 2009, Maron’s show has played a pivotal role in shaping the podcasting landscape, featuring over 1,600 episodes with notable guests including Barack Obama, Keith Richards, and Carol Burnett. Notably, his episode with Robin Williams was recognized as the first one-on-one podcast episode to be included in America’s National Recording Registry.
Maron’s decision aligns with the evolving media landscape, as podcasts have increasingly become popular and are now being incorporated into video formats. Despite 2023 being challenging for many podcasts, numerous popular shows have managed to maintain or even grow their audiences. Reflecting on his journey, Maron stated, “We’re tired, we’re burnt out, and we are utterly satisfied with the work we’ve done.”
He emphasized that this decision does not mark his retirement from podcasting, leaving the door open for potential future projects. “It doesn’t mean I’m never going to do something like this again,” he noted. He expressed gratitude for the journey, stating, “It’s OK to end things,” and highlighted the collaborative realization with McDonald that it was time to conclude the podcast.
