ASU Men’s Basketball: NAIA Scoring Leader Commits to Team

Anthony Johnson Commits to ASU Men’s Basketball, Boosting Roster Depth

TEMPE, AZ – Anthony Johnson, a standout guard who led the NAIA in scoring, has officially committed to the Arizona State University men’s basketball team. Johnson made the announcement on Sunday, adding a significant piece to ASU’s backcourt, which has seen considerable turnover after a challenging previous season.

Last year, while playing for Cumberlands in Kentucky, the 6-foot-2 guard averaged an impressive 23.6 points per game, shooting 48.1% from the field and 34.5% from three-point range. With 779 total points and 214 made free throws—both NAIA highs—Johnson also contributed 3.4 assists and 4.9 rebounds over 33 games, leading his team to the NAIA Round of 16.

Johnson’s accolades include being named a First Team NAIA All-American, and he recorded a standout performance with a game-high 32 points in his final outing against Arizona Christian.

His addition follows that of Jake O’Neil from Idaho State, who is also joining ASU but needs a waiver to be eligible for the upcoming season. O’Neil, a 6-foot-4 guard, averaged 13.1 points and 9.3 rebounds during his time at Idaho State.

ASU’s roster is primarily composed of transfers after the team lost nearly its entire lineup, including notable 2025 class commits like 7-foot-1 Leo Curtis and 6-foot-7 Jaion Pitt. With the new additions, the Sun Devils aim to revamp their squad for the 2025-26 season, which boasts a mix of seasoned players and young talent.

Expected guards now include Trevor Best, Moe Odum, Bryce Ford, Anthony Johnson, Adante’ Holiman, and Jake O’Neil. The forward position features players like Andrija Grbovic and Marcus Adams Jr. as ASU looks to build a competitive team moving forward.
