Arizona Wildcats Dominate Cal Poly 14-0, Advance to Super Regionals
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — In a commanding performance, Aaron Walton shone as the Arizona Wildcats trounced Cal Poly 14-0, clinching a spot in the super regionals on Sunday night. Walton launched three home runs, driving in six runs, while teammate Maddox Mihalakis contributed two homers and three RBIs. Tommy Splaine added a two-run homer and also recorded three RBIs for the Wildcats, who now boast a 42-18 record.
Walton’s explosive night began with a two-run homer during a five-run first inning. He followed up with another two-run shot in the second, positioning Arizona at an impressive 8-0 lead. The Wildcats continued to dominate with Walton’s third blast in the sixth and more contributions from Mihalakis and Splaine in the later innings.
Arizona’s pitching staff combined for a shutout, with starter Smith Bailey going six innings and surrendering only four hits. In contrast, Cal Poly’s Ethan Marmie struggled, giving up six runs before exiting the game early. Despite the loss, Nate Castellon stood out for the Mustangs with two hits.
This marks Arizona’s sixth trip to the super regionals, where they hold a notable 4-1 record in prior appearances.
