Remains of Charred Man Discovered in Stone Mountain Park, Georgia

Authorities discovered the badly burned body of a young man in Georgia’s Stone Mountain Park on Saturday. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the investigation, with preliminary autopsy results scheduled for Monday at the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office. The body was found by a hiker around 8:18 a.m. in a less-trafficked area, approximately 100 yards from a tower for the Summit Skyride, a cable car attraction leading to the mountain’s peak. While the location is not entirely remote, it’s described as rarely hiked, raising questions about how the body ended up there.

Stone Mountain Department of Public Safety spokesperson John Bankhead noted that the situation is unusual, and longstanding staff at the park haven’t encountered anything like this before. Investigators have a possible identity for the deceased, based on personal belongings and a vehicle left nearby, but have yet to confirm it.

Additionally, authorities are investigating the fire related to the body, which falls under the jurisdiction of the DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department’s arson team. Stone Mountain Park is known for its attractions, including a lakeside resort and an amusement park, but it’s also notable for hosting a large depiction of Confederate figures, which has attracted various demonstrations and divided public opinion. This sculpture was initiated in 1924 and completed in 1972. The park is located about 20 miles east of Atlanta, making it a popular destination for both locals and visitors.
