Reflecting: Insights from the Mynderse Microphone | Lifestyle

Historic Student Newspaper Discovery at Seneca Falls Historical Society

Seneca Falls, NY – The Seneca Falls Historical Society recently unearthed a treasure from its archives: the Mynderse Microphone, the student newspaper of Mynderse Academy, which ran from its first issue on January 27, 1928, until approximately 1972.

As the new curator, my initial assumption about the “Mynderse Microphone” being audio equipment quickly shifted when I realized it referred to a vital student-run publication. This newspaper was produced by an all-student staff who dedicated their free time, weekends, and holidays to deliver engaging content to the Mynderse community.

The Microphone aimed to keep students and residents informed about school activities, sports, and significant events. An editorial from the inaugural issue expressed its desire to revitalize school spirit, noting, “The first aim of the paper is to acquaint the students and public with all the activities of Mynderse,” while revealing a commitment to report on topics pertinent to school life.

Following its early years of bi-weekly publication, the Microphone transitioned to a monthly release until the early 1970s. The Historical Society currently holds an extensive collection of issues ranging from 1928 to 1972, offering a unique glimpse into the daily life at Mynderse Academy across decades.

Significant moments captured include coverage of World War II, featuring stories of Mynderse alumni serving in the military, and the impact of major community events like the opening of the Home Economics Department’s lunchroom.

As this investigation into the school’s history unfolds, the Historical Society invites anyone with additional information on the Mynderse Microphone—especially its later years—to share their stories. This endeavor promises to shed more light on a significant chapter in local education and culture.
