Corbin Burnes Exits Early as Diamondbacks Face Nationals
PHOENIX — In a challenging turn for the Arizona Diamondbacks, star pitcher Corbin Burnes exited Sunday’s game against the Washington Nationals after 4.2 strong innings. Having dominated early, Burnes surrendered only one hit before showing signs of difficulty following a two-out single from CJ Abrams.
With his velocity noticeably down during that at-bat, Burnes was briefly visited by manager Torey Lovullo and trainer Max Esposito before signaling his exit from the game, visibly disheartened as he walked off the field. The Diamondbacks were leading 3-0 at the time, aiming to break a four-game losing streak.
Relief pitcher Jalen Beeks, who was quickly warmed up in the bullpen, unfortunately inherited Burnes’ situation and allowed the lead runner to score, tagging Burnes with one earned run. Despite the setback, Burnes had been exceptional leading up to his exit, posting a remarkable 1.71 ERA over five appearances in September, allowing only six earned runs in 31.2 innings after previously missing time due to right shoulder inflammation.
Burnes, a four-time All-Star, joined the Diamondbacks this season under a hefty six-year contract worth $210 million, aimed at leading the rotation. Notably, he holds an opt-out clause after the second year of the deal.
The Diamondbacks and their fans will be holding their breath as they await further updates on Burnes’ condition after an impressive, though cut short, outing. As this story continues to develop, stay tuned for more updates.
