A passenger train derailed in western Russia’s Bryansk region late Saturday, resulting in at least seven fatalities and around 30 injuries. The incident was linked to the collapse of a bridge, which local officials attributed to “illegal interference” in transport operations. Moscow Railways did not elaborate on the circumstances leading to the bridge’s failure. The bridge was reportedly situated above the railway tracks where the train was traveling.
Images released by government agencies depicted the aftermath, showing train cars mangled among the debris of the collapsed structure. Eyewitness footage showed vehicles narrowly avoiding the disaster moments before the bridge fell. Bryansk regional Governor Alexander Bogomaz confirmed the death toll and emphasized that emergency services were on-site providing necessary aid to victims, including two children among the injured.
While Russian officials have not specifically identified those responsible for the incident, past statements from some authorities have linked attacks on railway infrastructure to pro-Ukrainian saboteurs. Ukrainian media had previously reported on successful sabotage attempts on Russian rail lines, including two explosions in December 2023 targeting critical trade routes between Russia and China; however, Ukraine’s security services did not confirm their involvement in the recent train derailment.
Russian Railways acknowledged one of the reported explosions but remained silent on the details surrounding the second incident. Due to the nature of these events, the information available on both sides remains limited and verification remains challenging. The situation continues to develop as investigations proceed.
