Arizona Family Dollar Stores Accused of Mispricing Merchandise

Family Dollar Fined $600,000 for Mispricing in Arizona Stores

PHOENIX — A recent investigation by the Arizona Attorney General’s Office revealed that Family Dollar has been mispricing items, leading to discrepancies between shelf prices and checkout totals. The discount retailer will pay $300,000 in civil penalties and legal fees, alongside an additional $300,000 to improve employee training and ensure accurate pricing practices.

The investigation highlighted that Family Dollar’s failure to update prices on store shelves concurrently with changes in their system contributed to these frequent mispricing issues. As a corrective measure, the retailer has agreed to display signs at each register committing to honor any lower advertised shelf price.

Attorney General Kris Mayes emphasized the importance of transparent pricing, especially amidst rising grocery costs. He stated, “Inaccurately advertising pricing is simply unacceptable,” underscoring the need for consumer protection in the marketplace.

Family Dollar stores in Arizona consistently failed inspection by the Weights and Measures Services Division of the Arizona Department of Agriculture, prompting this legal action. Customers who encounter pricing discrepancies are encouraged to report issues to the Arizona Attorney General’s Office.
