Arizona Diamondbacks Make Key Roster Moves Amid Struggles
PHOENIX — In a surprising turn of events, the Arizona Diamondbacks have opted to send relief pitcher Kevin Ginkel and top prospect Jordan Lawlar back to the minors as the team grapples with a tough start to June, currently sitting below .500.
Ginkel’s recent performance has been a concern, highlighted by a poor outing against Pittsburgh where he allowed five earned runs, inflating his ERA to 12.60 since returning from the injured list. "We just gotta get the job done," manager Torey Lovullo remarked about Ginkel’s option. Despite showing potential earlier in the season, Ginkel has struggled, particularly with his fastball command, leading to a rise in slider usage. Lovullo is optimistic about Ginkel returning more refined by mid-June.
Jordan Lawlar’s situation was equally disappointing. The young infielder struggled offensively, going 0-for-19 with numerous defensive errors. Despite demonstrating promising defensive skills across multiple positions, his inability to adjust to major league pitching proved costly. General manager Mike Hazen acknowledged Lawlar’s hard work but noted the need for him to improve his plate discipline and recognize pitches better.
With these roster changes, the Diamondbacks have called up reliever Jeff Brigham and re-signed utility man Ildemaro Vargas to fill the gaps left by Ginkel and Lawlar. As the team adjusts, both players are expected to reflect on their performances, aiming to return to the big league in better form.
