Tempe Implements New Party Ordinances to Mitigate Noise and Strain on Police
TEMPE, AZ – As weekend noise from large parties near Arizona State University becomes a growing concern, the city of Tempe is enforcing new ordinances to address the issue. Effective Sunday, these regulations target nuisance gatherings that place a strain on police resources.
Commander Kim Hale of the Tempe Police Department highlighted the impact of these events on overall safety, noting that responding to multiple parties hinders officers from addressing other calls for service. The new fines have significantly increased: a first violation will now incur a $500 charge, escalating to $1,500 for a second violation and $4,000 for subsequent offenses. Business owners face similar penalties for liquor license infractions.
Residents express mixed feelings about the steep fines, believing warnings should precede penalties. Property owners are also being informed, as they will be held accountable if tenants fail to pay fines. Furthermore, a new “community impact properties” category will designate habitual offenders for a three-year period, allowing for an appeals process and the opportunity to negotiate a resolution with police.
Public feedback had strong support for these measures, with 82% in favor, reflecting the troubling noise issue affecting local residents.
