Diamondbacks Sign Veteran Sean Reid-Foley Amid Bullpen Shakeup
PHOENIX — In a strategic move to bolster their bullpen, the Arizona Diamondbacks have signed veteran right-hander Sean Reid-Foley to a minor league contract. This decision comes as the team continues to face challenges with its relief pitching, leading to a series of roster adjustments.
On Friday, the Diamondbacks optioned relief pitcher Kevin Ginkel to Triple-A Reno to make room for newcomer Jeff Brigham and designated Joe Mantiply for assignment. General Manager Mike Hazen acknowledged the urgency for improvements within the bullpen, citing limited options primarily through internal resources or the waiver wire. "The external options are gonna be on the waiver wire," Hazen explained. "We sign guys and we send them to Reno and hopefully get them rehabbed a little bit."
Reid-Foley, 29, was recently released by the New York Mets. In his prior seasons, he posted a solid 2.15 ERA in 31 MLB games; however, injuries, including Tommy John surgery in 2022, have hampered his availability. His 2023 stint saw him struggle in Triple-A Syracuse, where he recorded an 8.36 ERA across 15 appearances.
Despite recent challenges, Reid-Foley has demonstrated encouraging strikeout potential, with a career K rate of 25.6%, surpassing the league average of 22.2%. Notably, his fastball averaged 95 mph last year, and opponents managed to hit only .149 against it, showcasing his effectiveness when healthy.
Reid-Foley has been assigned to Reno to continue his development as the Diamondbacks aim to find solutions within their roster to enhance their struggling bullpen.
