Sun Devil Baseball Triumphs in NCAA Regional Opener
LOS ANGELES – Arizona State University’s Sun Devil Baseball team showcased a remarkable performance in their NCAA Los Angeles Regional opener, defeating No. 3 seed UC Irvine 4-2. The victory marks ASU’s first postseason win under Head Coach Willie Bloomquist.
Jacob Tobias made an impressive postseason debut, hitting a home run on the first pitch he faced and contributing two doubles along with three runs. Isaiah Jackson also hit a solo home run and provided a crucial RBI that helped secure the victory. The pitching lineup of Ben Jacobs, Jonah Giblin, and Cole Carlon effectively contained UC Irvine’s offense, limiting them to just two runs on five hits while striking out 11.
Despite some defensive lapses, including six walks and two errors, ASU maintained composure. A key moment came in the eighth inning when Cole Carlon induced a double play to thwart a UCI rally with the bases loaded.
The Sun Devils, now boasting a 36-22 record, will face host team UCLA on May 31 at 6 p.m. AZT, offering them another opportunity to progress in the tournament. Coach Bloomquist expressed pride in his players, emphasizing their resilience and tight-knit spirit as they aim for an extended postseason run.
