Convicted Arizona Murderer Sentenced to Life After Second Killing Post-Release
Clifton Nez Hamalowa, a 47-year-old from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, has been sentenced to life in prison plus 10 years for murdering Richard Olds, just 16 days after his release from prison. Hamalowa, a convicted murderer previously incarcerated for a different killing in 2020, fatally shot Olds in front of his young child on reservation land belonging to the Gila River Indian Community, approximately 30 miles northeast of Phoenix.
Federal prosecutors highlighted the brutality of the crime, stating Hamalowa and his siblings later dumped the victim’s body in a remote area. Following a seven-day trial, Hamalowa was found guilty on multiple charges, including murder and conspiracy to commit assault. His siblings, Thomas Leon Hamalowa and Devonne Beth Hamalowa, pleaded guilty as accessories.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office noted Hamalowa’s extensive history of violence, detailing prior incidents involving stabbings, including one involving his mother. Prosecutors labeled him a "career offender," explicitly stating that witness intimidation occurred to hinder reporting. Hamalowa’s sentencing on May 27 underscores the serious threat he poses to society.
