What Steps Can Kyler Murray and the Cardinals Offense Take to Improve in 2025?

Press Article: Cardinals Focus on Controlled Chaos for Offensive Growth in 2025

TEMPE – Despite showcasing a potent running game that ranked seventh, the Arizona Cardinals fell short of top-tier offensive performance in the 2024 season, landing 11th overall in total offense. The passing game struggled, finishing at 18th, which necessitates a renewed focus for 2025.

Quarterback Kyler Murray and Offensive Coordinator Drew Petzing emphasized the need for "controlled chaos" as they aim to capitalize on off-schedule plays this season. "I think where we can be better as a unit and myself is extending plays in the scramble drill," said Murray in a recent episode of the Cardinals Corner podcast. He cited the need for improvement in off-script situations, referencing dynamic quarterbacks like Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson.

Murray’s scrambling statistics reflect his untapped potential; he averaged just 5.13 yards per attempt in scrambles in 2024, compared to 10.9 yards on designed rollouts. His ability to create plays was exemplified during a notable encounter with the Los Angeles Rams, where broken plays led to key touchdowns. However, inconsistency plagued his performances, leaving the offense yearning for stability, especially in crucial moments.

Petting reiterated the significance of effective decision-making and adaptability during plays. "There’s a high variance with off-schedule plays, but when we execute, we see great numbers," he explained. Both men acknowledged that the responsibility to make plays extends beyond Murray, urging teammates to remain active when plays break down.

With the 2025 season fast approaching, the Cardinals’ success may hinge on their ability to harness this dynamic and unpredictable aspect of their offense. The focus will be on synchronization between Murray and his teammates to maximize opportunities and propel the team forward.
