Arizona Cardinals Shift Focus to Defense with Major Offseason Moves
The Arizona Cardinals are making a bold statement this offseason by prioritizing their defensive line, signing high-profile free agents and allocating nearly all their draft picks to bolster their defense. Safety Jalen Thompson emphasizes that the team’s identity will be rooted in a defensive approach this season.
“We were in a lot of games last year with the defense, and we could have won more with a little more effort,” Thompson said during an appearance on Arizona Sports’ Wolf & Luke. “This year should be a little different.”
Among the notable additions are defensive stars Josh Sweat, Dalvin Tomlinson, and veteran Calais Campbell, all anticipated to elevate the team’s performance. Thompson expressed confidence in the new talent, stating, “They’re intentional, they come to practice, they’re consistent. I think that should be really good for us.”
Under the leadership of defensive coordinator Nick Rallis, who Thompson described as evolving as both a coach and a playcaller, the Cardinals are determined to exceed expectations. “There are going to be opportunities out there for the coaching staff, for defensive players, for the whole team,” Thompson added, highlighting a collective growth mindset within the squad.
The Cardinals didn’t stop at the defensive line; they also welcomed rookie cornerbacks Will Johnson and Denzel Burke to enhance their secondary. Thompson stressed the importance of mentoring these young players while living up to the high standards set by head coach Jonathan Gannon, who has a strong defensive background.
“We feel like we are the best group in the building,” Thompson asserted. “We have to hold ourselves to that standard. That is how we are going to win games this year—by making plays and supporting our team.” With a renewed focus on defense, the Cardinals aim to make a significant impact in the upcoming season.
