As China’s Threats Increase, Taiwan Seeks Enhanced U.S. Military Support to Bolster Its Defenses

In Pingtung County, Taiwan, a significant military test was conducted, featuring U.S.-made mobile rocket launchers, known as HIMARS, which successfully fired 33 rockets toward the Pacific Ocean. This demonstration reflects Taiwan’s urgent need to enhance its military capabilities in the face of increasing threats from China, which claims Taiwan as its territory. HIMARS, capable of targeting coastal regions in mainland China, is similar to the system used by Ukrainian forces against Russia and has been part of Taiwan’s $1 billion arms procurement from the U.S.

Though the U.S. does not have official diplomatic ties with Taiwan, it remains the island’s principal arms supplier, facilitating the development of crucial military technologies like drones and missiles. As China escalates military drills and incursions near Taiwan, Taipei has extended compulsory military service and intensified annual training for reservists, pledging to boost its defense budget beyond 3% of GDP.

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense emphasized the critical nature of U.S.-Taiwan military cooperation, particularly through new intelligence-sharing agreements. This partnership is seen as vital against China’s military threats, which outnumber Taiwan’s forces significantly.

However, uncertainty surrounds the extent of U.S. support, as “strategic ambiguity” prevails regarding American intervention in a potential conflict. Concerns about fluctuating U.S. policies under different administrations add to this uncertainty.

On the ground, a sense of duty toward national defense appears to be growing among Taiwanese citizens, highlighting an evolving mindset toward military service as a protective measure for their homeland—especially as parallels are drawn with Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia. Some individuals, like Tony Lu, have even volunteered abroad, echoing the sentiment that preparedness is essential despite a general desire to avoid war.
