Diamondbacks Struggle in Late Innings: A Call for Change
PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks faced disappointment in a recent 9-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates despite entering the game with a strong 6-0 lead and ace Corbin Burnes on the mound. This outcome further highlighted the team’s faltering bullpen, which currently ranks 26th in the league with a 5.41 ERA. The D-backs have demonstrated a resilience with 12 comeback wins this season, yet their opponents have outperformed them with 19 such victories.
General manager Mike Hazen acknowledged the pressing need for improvement. Speaking on Arizona Sports, he declared, “This is my problem to fix,” emphasizing that both the bullpen’s performance and late-game defense must be addressed. The team has struggled with injuries, including A.J. Puk on the 60-day injured list, but Hazen insists that underperformance by relievers cannot be overlooked.
Recent performances from relievers Kevin Ginkel and Jalen Beeks proved particularly troubling, allowing seven runs in one inning against the Pirates. Hazen suggested potential improvements through trades or younger talent from the minor leagues, but acknowledged the challenges of making immediate changes.
Manager Torey Lovullo has noted additional issues beyond the bullpen, including defensive lapses and difficulties with runners in scoring position. Despite an otherwise strong performance from starting pitchers and a solid offense averaging five to six runs per game, the D-backs have been unable to convert these opportunities into wins, losing six of their last seven games.
Lovullo is actively engaging with players to gauge the team’s mindset and root out any focus issues. As they prepare for upcoming games, the Diamondbacks are determined to rectify their late-game execution and capitalize on their potential.
