May 28—Spencer & Co. Steakhouse, located north of Kalispell, opens its doors each evening at 5 p.m., ushering in a loyal crowd that receives warm, personalized greetings from their staff. Established 33 years ago by Donna Dawson, the restaurant is now run by her daughter, Paula Davey, who emphasizes its cozy atmosphere and simple yet satisfying menu.

The steakhouse features eight cuts of meat, each served with a salad, Texas toast, and an unusual side of handmade spaghetti – a culinary hallmark that has persisted since the restaurant’s inception. The standout dish is the Spencer Steak, a 14-ounce ribeye that boasts rich flavors without heavy seasonings, thanks to careful sourcing of premium beef from Red Lodge. “We pay top dollar for our steaks, so we don’t want to cover it in seasoning,” Davey noted.

Spaghetti is a nod to Davey’s mother’s childhood experiences with Italian-influenced steakhouses, stemming from a lack of an oven that necessitated spaghetti over ravioli. Made from a savory tomato sauce mixed with premium cuts of beef, the dish is beloved by patrons, reflecting the restaurant’s commitment to tradition and family values.

The establishment thrives on a family-run ethos, with many staff members boasting decades of service. Head Chef Jenelle Cavender has been part of the team for 25 years, contributing to a menu that is both simple and fresh. “We’re not a chain restaurant. We strive to know our people,” Davey remarked, highlighting the welcoming and communal spirit of Spencer’s.
